You Can Do This: Adult volleyballSep 09, 2011 (The Sacramento Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Welcome to "You Can Do This," a look at activities worth trying for people of all abilities in the Sacramento area. To suggest an activity, email [email protected] The activity: Adult volleyball Where to do it here: Most of the area's parks and recreation departments have summer and fall adult leagues. For instance, the Cosumnes Community Services District will open registration next week for co-ed and women's leagues. Another option for pick-up volleyball is to consult the web forum www.sacvolleyball.com, which is chock-full of information about open gym nights and instruction. Less hard-core is the league started by XOSO Sports, which combined sports with socializing. What's the big deal: Said Nick Berruezo, founder of XOSO Sports: "People love our volleyball leagues. They always sell out. We get about 200 participants. The great thing is, we have two levels. One is for beginners, people who are happy just to hit the ball back over the net. The other is for people who maybe played in high school or college. One of our advantages is you don't need to be part of a team. Individuals can sign up as 'free agents' and be put on a team." Want to learn? Many players haven't experienced volleyball since junior high gym class. Not to worry: The beginners' teams in many parks and rec leagues feature veterans who can hone your skills. Also check www.sacvolleyball.com for clinics. The cost factor: Fees for most city-run leagues range from $50-$75 per person to $500-$600 per team. XOSO Sports, which will start its new league Oct. 18, costs $60 per person. Most open-gym nights charge a nominal fee ($5-$7) for those wanting to play.
