Two GCHS players to be held out of tonight's game with Woodward

Sep 09, 2011 (The Garden City Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Two Garden City High School football players are being held out of tonight's GCHS-Woodward, Okla., football game because of safety concerns.

GCHS Athletic Director Martin Segovia and head football coach Brian Hill confirmed that senior running back Antonio Rubio and senior wide receiver Taylen Kemp would not be in uniform for tonight's home opener.

Segovia said the school's concern for the players' safety was due to Tuesday's shooting death of GCHS wrestler Braxston Medina.

"There's still an ongoing investigation, and we just felt it in the players' best interest for them not to be on the football field," Segovia said.

On Tuesday morning, according to Finney County Undersherrif John Andrews, Rubio, 18, and a 17-year-old boy whose name has not been released by law enforcement because he is a minor, had gone with Medina to a residence at 1625 T-Bone Drive.

Segovia confirmed this morning that the other teen with Medina and Rubio was Kemp.

According to the sheriff's office, Medina entered the residence through an unlocked back door and then was shot by a 17-year-old who lived at the residence. Medina was taken to St. Catherine Hospital, where he later died.

The sheriff's office has not released the name of the shooter because no arrest has been made and the case remains under investigation.
