Raider boys, girls runners take fifth in Jefferson

Sep 09, 2011 (Newton Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The CMB boys and girls cross country teams each picked up fifth-place finishes in 14-team fields at a meet in Jefferson on Thursday.

Hayley Leonard once again found herself as the Raiders' top finisher, taking sixth with a time of 17:22. Anne Deutsch finished 15th with a time of 18:25, earning a medal in the process. The Raiders finished with 107 points, which didn't trail the next three teams by much. South Hamilton took first with 67 points.

"The girls and myself were both a little disappointed with our fifth place finish as a team," CMB coach Jerry Meinerts said. "But again, just like our last race, we were just 13 points from finishing in second place. We are getting so close, but again it takes a team effort, all 5 girls need to run their best races." On the boys side, Aaron Ward finished fourth overall for the Raiders with a time of 18:48 after overcoming a slow start. Only one other member of the team, Cody Christianson, finished under 20 minutes, but the team did show improvement across the board. Derek Morrison and Caleb Wolff shortened their times from the last race by a minute, and Drake Caple improved his time from this same meet last year by nearly three minutes.

"I thought several of our guys had some good races tonight," Meinerts said. "We are going to continue getting better. I think we took a step in the right direction tonight." The Raiders will be back in action next week at Huxley.

SFlbLynnville-Sully volleyball swept by Iowa Valley The Lynnville-Sully volleyball team hosted its first dual volleyball match of the season on Thursday, and it didn't go in favor of the Hawks as they were swept by last year's conference runner up, Iowa Valley.

Lynnville-Sully fell by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-14.

Kenzi Ritter led the Hawks in kills with six, Kelly Sevcik led in assists with seven, and went 11-of-11 on serves with one ace. Sydney Brand contributed 12 digs, with Kelsey Beyer right behind with 11, adding five kills and 11 digs.

"Iowa Valley was a tough team, but we served well and made huge strides in our serve receive," Lynnville-Sully coach Heather James said. "We only missed one serve all night, so I'm very pleased with that." The Hawks (0-6) look to pick up their first win on Saturday, when they'll be joined by Colfax-Mingo at a tournament in Twin Cedars.
