BRIEF: Police search for driver that struck Providence High student

Sep 09, 2011 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck a Providence High School student walking near the school Friday afternoon in south Charlotte.

The student was struck in the hit-and-run around 3:45 p.m. in the 1800 block of Pineville-Matthews Road.

The student, who has not been identified, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries, according to paramedics.

The suspect vehicle left the scene and was last spotted driving on Pineville-Matthews Road, heading away from the high school toward Providence Road, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Police said they don't know the make or model of the vehicle but said it was a four-door SUV or truck. Witnesses described the vehicle as light or dark brown with metal bumpers. It might have tinted windows, police said.

Anyone with any information about the hit-and-run is asked to call 911 or police at 704-544-4835.
