BRIEF: No serious injuries after school bus flips in Amwell Township

Sep 09, 2011 (The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- No students were seriously injured when a school bus flipped onto its side this morning in Washington County, said Trinity Area School District Superintendent Paul Kasunich.

Two adults and 26 members of the Trinity High School marching band were on the bus when it crashed at 10:10 a.m. in Amwell Township, said Lone Pine Volunteer Fire Chief Keith Van Varenberg, who was behind the bus and witnessed the accident.

The students were travelling to Trinity South Elementary School for a performance, Kasunich said.

Sixteen students were taken to Washington, Canonsburg and St. Clair hospitals with minor bumps and bruises. Van Varenberg said one suffered a "nasty" cut to his right arm.

"I was definitely scared for the kids. That was my first thought," said Van Varenberg, whose daughter is a member of the color guard but was not on the bus. He was behind the bus driving a truck filled with band equipment for the performance, he said.

The bus was coming down South Main Street when it hit a telephone pole, veered into the left lane, and hit an embankment and flipped, the chief said. No other vehicles were involved.

State police are investigating what caused the driver to lose control of the bus.
