: Weekend workshops for young music-makers

Sep 09, 2011 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- YOUNG music-makers and children keen to learn an instrument can, from next weekend, enjoy workshops run by the Department of Education and Children's Music Service.

The workshops, from 10am to 12 noon on Saturdays, are suitable for seven to 13-year-olds and take place at Cronk-y-Berry and Victoria Road primary schools.

Workshops start on Saturday 17th September and run for 20 weeks during the autumn and spring terms. The cost is GBP21 per child per term, with a reduction if a sibling also attends.

Maggie Richardson , Head of Music Service, said the workshops feature guitars, keyboards, recorders, music theory, singing and other musical activities, with children working towards a Christmas concert. The timetable permits children to enjoy different activities during a morning.

'This is an opportunity for children to discover a range of musical skills and styles in an informal way,' Maggie said. 'It is perfect for children who don't yet learn an instrument but also for those who can already play.

'The variety of activities is designed by our team of experienced teachers to develop children's general knowledge of music as well as their listening and performing skills. The social benefits are also enormous: Children make new friends and learn how to work with others in a fun setting.' Parents can enrol their children on the first day at either venue or ring the Music Service on 686555 for more information.
