Fraudsters Use Fake MTN Number to Dupe

Sep 09, 2011 (Daily Trust/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- Fraudsters operating with a coded fake MTN number (180) now send deceitful messages to people congratulating them for winning a Sony Bravia television and N24,000 free air time.

They send their messages to people with MTN lines in order to make them think its real.

The victims are asked to call phone number 08100073398 for enquiries on how to get their prizes.

Reacting to the message, MTN's Online Customer Care Representative, Abdul Abdulwahid, said any message sent informing customers to call a particular number is fraudulent.

"MTN directly calls customers to inform them whenever they win any gift in a promo," he explained.

He noted that unscrupulous persons sometimes hacked phone numbers, adding that MTN engineers are working hard to ensure the hackers no longer gained access to such lines.
