Rejected Polk man accused of cyber crimes against woman

Sep 08, 2011 (Tampa Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Gainesville man cyberstalked a Polk County woman, hacking into her email and Facebook accounts and even posting a "semi-nude" photograph of her as her Facebook profile picture, Polk deputies said.

Investigators arrested 34-year-old Michael Deidrick on Wednesday at his job at the Alachua County Library. He was charged with five counts of denying computer services to an authorized user and one count of cyberstalking, and he will be transported to the Polk County Jail.

In March, Deidrick and the Polk woman communicated on Facebook and he expressed that he wanted a romantic relationship with her, deputies said.

When she declined, he hacked into five of her accounts including Facebook, Gmail and AOL, deputies said. He denied her access to the accounts and intercepted and deleted her outgoing, incoming and sent messages.

The victim experienced "significant emotional distress" from Deidrick's actions, an arrest affidavit states.

This is at least the second time in recent months that such a cyberstalking incident has occurred in the Tampa Bay area, authorities said.

At least 19 women were victimized by computer hacker Joseph Bernard Campbell, 24, of Largo, who broke into their email accounts, captured risque photographs of the women and then swapped them for the women's Facebook profile pictures, authorities said. Campbell's plea agreement says he posted the victims' private photos and videos on various websites "to harass the victims and cause them emotional distress."
