Cyber crime centre to conduct intensive training programmesAMMAN, Sep 08, 2011 (Jordan Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Beginning in late September, IT university students and security personnel will be able to enrol in intensive training programmes on means to combat cyber crimes. Trainees completing the course, to be held by the National Centre for the Security and Assurance of Information and Communication Systems, in partnership with a specialised American company, will receive internationally accredited certificates. "Those who enrol in the variety of courses, which we will start offering as of the end of this month, will have better chances while competing for jobs," Jamal Karaki, head of centre's founding committee, told The Jordan Times over the phone on Wednesday. With the number of e-threats and cyber crimes on the rise in the region and across the world, there is a dire need for well trained and specialised personnel in this field, he said. "We will provide training on the latest trends, technologies and solutions," Karaki added, noting that this programme is not provided at universities. The centre will also implement a nationwide campaign later this month to educate school students on how to protect themselves from cyber crimes, he said. "We are waiting for the Ministry of Education to give us a list of schools to be covered by the initiative," Karaki added. The campaign will initially cover private schools in Amman and will be extended to cover all schools across the country, he said. In 2010, the Criminal Investigation Department dealt with 450 cyber crime cases in the Kingdom, the majority of them e-mail hacking and identity theft. Most cyber crimes in Jordan go unreported due to lack of public awareness that such acts are illegal and criminalised, according to the department, which noted that the bulk of e-crimes reported in the country involve the use of personal data and pictures for blackmailing and the majority of victims are women whose pictures or personal data were stolen. Launched by His Majesty King Abdullah in February, the national centre, which is located on the Hashemite University campus, provides training and conducts research on e-crimes and means to combat them. ___ (c)2011 the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) Visit the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) at www.jordantimes.com Distributed by MCT Information Services |
