Veracode Publishes "News of the World" Infographic: Anatomy of a Scandal

Created in conjunction with Measured SEM and Infographic World, this visual representation of the events surrounding the News of the World's downfall follows Veracode's previous infographic depicting details of the Sony PlayStation Network hack.

In the News of the World infographic, Veracode examines the scandal's key players and shows a timeline of incredulous events that involve a "who's who" of the rich and famous. It also summarizes some of the techniques News of the World reporters used to pull off nefarious schemes including bribery, cracking insecure passwords, caller ID spoofing and social engineering.

"While the News of the World story has many layers to it, packed with intrigue and scandal and poor decision-making, there's also very interesting security and privacy angles to it that made the infographic especially appealing to us from a technology perspective," said Connie Stack, vice president of corporate marketing, Veracode. "For example, it's suggested that weak mobile passwords may have played a role in the phone hacking scandal, yet many mobile service providers still limit users to a four character, numeric password. Maybe they need to re-evaluate this limitation to provide their subscribers better protection."

With recent headlines about the identities of News of the World journalists linked to phone hacking charges ordered to remain confidential, this story continues to evolve. The Veracode infographic starts with a glance into News Corp (News - Alert).'s financials and its multiple subsidiaries, and moves from initial company milestones in the early 2000s to recent events detailing new victims' accusations. The piece also provides a snap shot of the negative impact on News Corp.'s stock price as the story began to unfold.
