Star of the Week: Canaan HuttonMERIDIAN, Sep 05, 2011 (The Meridian Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Fifth grader Canaan Hutton has such a wide variety of interests, it's hard for him to pick just one thing he wants to be when he grows up. Famous pianist, talk show host, and video game programmer are just a few of the West Lauderdale Middle School student's dream jobs. Canaan, who is in the intellectually gifted program at his school and has often made honor roll, is interested in everything from music to microbiology -- but music is easily his favorite subject. He especially loves unusual instruments. Along with the more popular piano, Canaan plays the dulcimer and the banjimer, and he wants to learn the banjo, mandolin, and ukulele, just to name a few. The country, classic rock, and bluegrass fan likes to make up his own songs and wants to be a songwriter one day. Canaan, who will turn 11 on Sept. 11, is in his first year of middle school and said he's enjoying the first year at his new school. He has a little brother, Connor, who is 5. His favorite animal is the giant anaconda, his favorite food is chicken and dumplings, and his favorite place is Southern Appalachia -- home of country and bluegrass music. When he's not at school, playing music, or doing volunteer work with Mustard Tree Missions, Canaan loves to spend his free time playing video games -- especially horror video games. ___ (c)2011 The Meridian Star (Meridian, Miss.)
