BRIEF: Chef Kamal opening south Kansas City restaurant

Sep 02, 2011 (The Kansas City Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Chef Yahia Kamal is keeping his wholesale operation but getting back into retail.

Kamal, who is known as "Yummy," plans to open Marble Top Cafe at 8436 Ward Parkway. Marble Top Cafe will offer Mediterranean sandwiches and salads along with cinnamon rolls, beignets and coffees.

First he plans to take a trip to his native Jordan for a three-week vacation and to attend his brother's wedding. Then he'll remodel the former Quiznos space in a shopping center north of Ward Parkway Center and open Marble Top Cafe in early November.

Kamal owned and operated Yummy's Market on 39th Street before getting into wholesale with his Yummy's Choice brand of prepared Mediterranean foods. He sells them at some area grocery stores such as Whole Foods. Items include hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Lebaneh, Feta Blocks and pita chips.

"I like feeding people. I like to cook," Kamal said.
