Bragging Rights

CORBIN, Sep 02, 2011 (The Times-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- In a game that had the feel of a district tournament match the Whitley County Lady Colonels were able to fight back and defeat Corbin in a hard fought 23-25, 25-22, 25-21 victory.

Whitley County coach David Halcomb was excited with the win.

"Any time Whitley County and Corbin get together it's a fierce rivalry," he said. "We won bragging rights. I'm really proud of our kids." The Lady Redhounds took control early in the first set behind the net play of Vanessa Wiseman. Wiseman scored on a couple of kills to give her team a 6-1 advantage.

Corbin's Allie Roaden also stepped up with three kills to pull the Lady Redhounds ahead 10-3.

The Lady Colonels fought back to tie the first set at 13-13, but Corbin turned to Wiseman who served four straight points to claim a 25-23 win in the first set. Wiseman's final serve hit the net and crawled over for the win.

Corbin started the second set the same as they did in the first by taking an early 9-2 advantage. Wiseman scored on three kills and a block early, while Roaden added a kill.

An ace by Wiseman gave the Lady Redhounds a 13-5 lead, but just when it appeared the Lady Colonels were done they answered with a 16-8 run to tie the game at 21 apiece.

Whitley County's Brittany Sergent stepped up late in the second set with six-straight points on serve to lead her team to a 25-22 win that forced a third set.

"We came out flat in the second set," Halcomb said. "I thought the wind was out of our sails. Brittany really stepped up for us. She played very well in the third set and really put the game away for us." Roaden took over at the net for Corbin early in the third set with three kills, but Whitley County answered with big shots by Sergent.

Alyssa Monhollen stepped up late with seven-straight points on serve to give Whitley County a 19-13 lead.

Roaden responded for the Lady Redhounds with six-straight points on serve to give Corbin a 20-19 advantage.

Sergent took over for Whitley County with two big kills late to give her team an exciting 25-21 win to claim the match.

"It was senior leadership,"Halcomb said. "We showed a lot of composure tonight. I think it's a big win, simply because it's Corbin. They are one of the top teams in the region." ___ (c)2011 The Times-Tribune (Corbin, Ky.) Visit The Times-Tribune (Corbin, Ky.) at www.thetimestribune.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
