Primary Status: Tax reform, reduced regulation key elements of Huntsman's jobs plan

Aug 31, 2011 (The New Hampshire Union Leader - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WEDNESDAY, AUG. 31, UPDATE: "TIME TO COMPETE." That's the title of the jobs creation plan GOP presidential hopeful and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman will unveil today in New Hampshire.

At Gilchrist Metal Fabricating in Hudson at 4:30 p.m., Huntsman will become the first of all major candidates for President, including incumbent Barack Obama, to lay out a detailed jobs plan.

Entitled "Time to Compete: An American Jobs Plan ," it will focus on tax reform, regulatory reform, energy independence and free trade.

Huntsman, in his speech, will focus on the need for serious, long-term solutions and the removal of regulatory burdens for short-term relief. He is expected to accuse Obama of failing to lead on the most important issue of the day. He'll accuse his GOP rivals of being unwilling to take the nation's problems seriously, citing their stances on the debt ceiling debate.

Huntsman will propose reforming the tax code with three individual brackets of 8, 14 and 23 percent. He will propose eliminating the capital gains and dividends taxes, as well as the alternative minimum tax.

He'll propose reducing the corporate tax rate to 25 percent.

"Meeting our challenges will require serious solutions, but above all, it will require serious leadership -- a quality in high demand in our nation's capital, and among my opponents on the campaign trail," Huntsman will say.

"The President believes that we can tax and spend and regulate our way to prosperity. We cannot. We must compete our way to prosperity," Huntsman will say.
