BRIEF: OU's Ronnell Lewis declared eligible

Sep 01, 2011 (Tulsa World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The preseason saga of Oklahoma defensive end Ronnell Lewis is over.

An OU spokesman posted on Twitter on Thursday that Lewis had been "declared academically eligible." Lewis' eligibility has been in question ever since the spring, his high school coach, Josh Been, said. Lewis did fine in his summer classwork, but the spring grade "hung over him," Been said.

No further information was made available by OU on Thursday morning, but Been told the Tulsa World in a telephone interview it was "still my belief" that Lewis would be in the starting lineup for Saturday's season opener.

"I don't see any reason why he wouldn't," Been said.

"As a coach, if I'm on Tuesday of my opener and a guy's in question whether his eligibility for whatever reason, then I'm not gonna have him going with the starting offense or the starting defense." ___ (c)2011 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.)
