Team leaders, volunteers sought for Coastal Cleanup

Aug 30, 2011 (Lodi News-Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Organizers of Lodi's 9th annual Coastal Cleanup are looking for team leaders and an organized crew of bike valet volunteers for the event on Sept. 17.

Every year, schools, service groups and families help clean Lodi Lake and the Mokelumne River. Volunteers form 10- to 12-person teams who collect trash and then sort and record everything that is found. The data is sent to The Ocean Conservancy's International database to help researchers find solutions to marine debris.

This year, the event is trying to "go green" by offering a bike valet for residents who want to ditch their cars and pedal to the lake. Everyone must bring their own bike lock.

The event is still looking for sponsors who can donate money or food and leaders to head up the volunteer teams. If you are interested, contact Kathy Grant at [email protected] or call her at 327-2063.

Anyone wanting to volunteer must have a signed liability release form. Waivers for volunteers age 18 and younger also need to be signed by a parent. Get a waiver by downloading it at www.lodi.gov, picking one up at the Lodi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services office, 125 N. Stockton St., or by emailing Grant.

Forms will also be available on the day of the event.
