Hitachi Cable announces small compact connectors for electric vehiclesAug 30, 2011 (M2 EQUITYBITES via COMTEX) -- Hitachi Cable Ltd (TOKYO:5812) (OTC:HCBLF), a manufacturer and seller of wires, cables, copper products and brake hoses, disclosed on Monday that with its proprietary design it has developed a small, compact connector that can harness power for hybrid electric and electric vehicles. The drive system of electric vehicles comprise of electric motors, inverters, batteries and AC and DC harnesses connecting these electrical devices in high-temperature conditions inside engine compartments. Hitachi's cables, made of Fluonlex fluorine resin, have superior heat resistance and flexibility and are halogen-free and the new connector will be compatible with cable conductor sizes ranging from 15 mm2 to 40 mm2, the company said. Unlike traditional connectors, the newly developed compact connectors are flat, a structure that permits a single spring to apply surface pressure to multiple terminals and lowers the connector volume by over 40%. This lineup of connectors includes two variations, one using extending cables and one using a bus bar, giving customers a choice for the type of connection they prefer. The connector promotes stable electrical performance, even under conditions of severe vehicle vibration, using a structure in which a spring force is applied after inserting the connector, allowing connections and achieving high vibration resistance of up to 181 m/s2 under the ISO 16750-3 standard via increased spring pressure.
