$556K approved to continue CHS constructionCORBIN, Aug 29, 2011 (The Times-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Corbin Board of Education met in a specially called meeting Thursday night and approved the BG forms and change orders that amount to $556,565 necessary to continue the ongoing construction at Corbin High School. Superintendent Ed McNeel explained the changes were necessary to keep the work going. "When they found the problems in the walls at the high school, they changed some of the BG work because of where it was located to fix the wall, "McNeel said. "So what this is doing is to get the go-ahead into the phase two project that is just ready to go to bid to keep the work going on." In mid-March during phase one remodeling, Hacker Brothers President David Jackson informed the school board there was evidence of structural movement in the outside wall and that cracks had been found after second-floor air conditioners were removed. At the time, the building was deemed safe for students and staff. After the structural analysis report in mid-April, three classrooms and a stairwell were were found to be unsafe and were closed. The rooms affected were the upstairs chemistry lab used by guidance counselors, a journalism lab and a history classroom on the first floor. A stairwell in the gym was also deemed off limits. McNeel said the paperwork needed to be approved to finish the rooms that are almost completed. "The counselors don't have their rooms and some rooms are almost finished, but they can't do it until the fix the walls. We need to fix some areas so we can go ahead and finish that part that is tied to the phase one project," McNeel said. "What it really amounts to is allowing the construction at the Corbin High School to continue without coming to a stop until we get to phase two which is fixing the walls, the heating and air and getting new windows." The school board will next meet Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Corbin Elementary School.
