North not looking past Wildcats

Aug 26, 2011 (The Sentinel Echo - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. -- The season started much different for North Laurel and Lynn Camp. While the Jaguars were rolling to a 45-6 win over Pineville, Lynn Camp fell behind quickly and lost to South Laurel 34-7.

North Laurel coach Chris Larkey said that does not mean Saturday's meeting in the Cumberland Valley Bowl will be an easy win. Or that his team will assume as much.

"They're pretty good. They had a lot of turnovers against South or they were right in the game," Larkey said.

Lynn Camp turned the ball over five times in the first half and never recovered from a 27-0 halftime hole. In reviewing game film, Larkey sees an opponent that is committed to running the ball.

"We know what Lynn Camp does the best and they don't make bones about it. They will run right at you," Larkey said.

Leading the rushing attack will be tailback Clint Jackson, who rushed for over 1,600 yards in eight games last season. Fullback Jesse Keith also has big play ability. Quarterback Aaron Mills can throw the ball when called upon to do so.

There is not a lot of size on defense with the Wildcats relying on speed to make the big play and the big hit.

"They are not called the hit men for nothing because they will come up and hit you," Larkey said.

Lynn Camp hasn't had a winning record since 2005 when it finished 9-3. They have made the playoffs the past four years. The roster may seem small at 27 players, but it's not anything the Class A school is not used to facing. The junior and sophomore class makes up 18 of the 27.

"Our kids are not overlooking anybody. They have seen the film on Lynn Camp and know they are pretty good," Larkey said.

One of the best surprises for Larkey in his team's 2011 debut was limiting Pineville to seven points. The defense held only one team below 20 points last season, a 20-17 win over South Laurel.

"I was surprised our defense got there so fast. Our defense played really well," Larkey said. "I think all the hard work we did over the summer ended up paying off."
