BRIEF: Police search for gumball machine thieves

Aug 26, 2011 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Police are looking for a couple that was caught on surveillance video breaking into a northeast Charlotte tire business and stealing four gumball machines.

Around 4:20 a.m. Aug. 19, a black Jeep Liberty driven by a woman pulled into the parking lot of the Used Tire Express on North Tryon Street, near the intersection of Sugar Creek Road, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

A man got out of the vehicle, police said, and then used a sledge hammer to smash the business' glass front door. Then the man went inside, took four gumball machines and put them in the vehicle before the pair drove away.

The stolen property was worth $600, according to a police report.

Anyone with information about the suspects or the vehicle is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
