Travelers Ready to Assist in Hurricane Irene Recovery


HARTFORD, Conn. --(Business Wire)--

Travelers has mobilized its Catastrophe Response Team to support locally based claim professionals and to provide residents with insurance claim assistance once Hurricane Irene passes. The company has stationed fully functional Mobile Claim Offices in strategic locations up and down the East Coast so they can reach customers impacted by the storm within hours. Mobile Claim Office locations will be available on the emergency response page on Travelers.com once they are in position and ready to help customers. In addition, Travelers pre-staged needed supplies to ensure claim representatives are prepared to begin helping customers immediately after the storm has passed.

"As families and business owners have been preparing their property, we have also made preparations so that claim professionals can access affected customers as quickly as possible and help them with the recovery process."

With time running out to make preparations before the storm makes landfall, it's important to follow safety measures during and after Hurricane Irene.

During:

  • Listen to the radio for important storm information and instructions.
  • If at home, stay inside and away from all windows, skylights and glass doors. Do not go outside, even if the weather appears to have calmed. The "eye" of the storm can pass quickly, leaving you outside when strong winds resume.
  • If you must evacuate, leave as soon as possible and be sure to tell someone outside of the storm area where you will e.

After:

  • Stay tuned to the radio or television. If you had to evacuate, return home only after authorities advise it is safe to do so.
  • Avoid downed power lines.
  • Beware of and check for gas leaks or electrical system damage.
  • Make temporary repairs as necessary.
  • Promptly report the loss to Travelers using the toll-free claim reporting number.

Background on Mobile Claim Offices
These first-in-the-industry vehicles were developed as a result of lessons learned from Hurricane Andrew, which devastated parts of Florida in 1992. They are staffed by catastrophe response team members and equipped with everything required to process claims in the midst of a disaster, such as onboard computers and databases, printers, photocopiers, cell phones, and fax machines. Each vehicle has its own generator, so they can operate in places without electricity and can process claims through wireless or satellite connectivity if land lines are not available.
