Rebels face Wildcats in marquee matchup

Aug 25, 2011 (The Augusta Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Tonight just got a little more crowded.

Strom Thurmond visits Laney at 7:05 p.m. in what was supposed to be the lone contest of the evening, but the possibility of inclement weather from Hurricane Irene has forced some other teams to adjust their game dates.

Ridge Spring-Monetta's home game against Saluda was moved from Friday night to tonight, and the story is the same for Augusta Christian's trip to face Porter-Gaud in Charleston, S.C.

But the Rebels-Wildcats game is still the highlight of the night. Both teams made the state playoffs last season, and Strom Thurmond is coming off an impressive 45-8 win against Williston-Elko this past Friday.

Laney lost to the Rebels 20-7 last year.

A Wildcats win tonight would even the all-time series at 3-3.

"Without question, it's not common to have this tough of an opponent during Week 1," Laney coach Lemuel Lackey said. "At the same time, it gives you a good sense of where you are at. But it doesn't mean you can't go up or down. We look forward to the challenge. Without question, they're explosive." Games moved to tonight Saluda at Ridge Spring-Monetta, 7:30 p.m.

Augusta Christian at Porter-Gaud, 7:30 p.m.
