Keynote Systems and Wireless Week Launch New Mobile Performance Index
SAN MATEO, Calif. --(Business Wire)--
Keynote
Systems (NASDAQ: KEYN), the global leader in Internet
and mobile cloud monitoring, today announced its partnership with
leading wireless industry publication Wireless
Week to publish its newest Mobile
Index, tracking the performance of leading mobile news and portal
sites.
In a survey conducted by Keynote and sponsored by Adobe, more than 65
percent of mobile users access news and portal websites as their primary
activity on their mobile phone.* With smartphones projected to dominate
the U.S. market by the end of 2011 according to Nielsen, content
publishers need to adapt to the mobile environment, optimize the user
experience and continually measure performance to stay on top of leading
brands.
"Keynote's mobile monitoring data provides an in-depth look at the
performance of some of the biggest players on the mobile Web," said
Andrew Berg, senior editor at Wireless Week (News - Alert). "We chose Keynote as a
partner because of their expertise in understanding mobile website
performance. They have helped us to bring awareness to what's really
going on for consumers using smartphones today."
"Benchmarks for mobile website performance have yet to be fine-tuned and
widely adopted in the industry," says Anshu Agarwal, vice president of
marketing at Keynote. "By creating an ongoing public benchmark, Keynote
and Wireless Week are setting an industry performance standard
for the mobile Web experience."
The mobile index will appear regularly in Wireless Week tracking
the performance of leading mobile websites and Keynote experts will
provide analysis, tips and techniques for improving mobile performance.
Keynote monitors mobile sites in the index on an hourly basis from
multiple locations on four US wireless networks using the browsers of
four popular smartphones: the iPhone 4 on AT&T, the HTC EVO (Android) on
Sprint, the Motorola Droid X (Android) on Verizon Wireless (News - Alert) and the
BlackBerry Curve on T-Mobile.
The data is collected from San Francisco, New York, Dallas and Chicago
and is then aggregated to provide an overall average in terms of both
speed and reliability.
Keynote Mobile Index for News and Portal sites - July 2011
According to the July index report supplied to Wireless Week the
mobile sites of Facebook, Google and Bing had the fastest load times for
the period. And MSNBC, The Weather Channel, Yahoo and Facebook had the
highest success rates (a measure of the site's reliability). Success
rate is the percent of tests that result in the complete and accurate
loading of the home page. Faster load times and high success rates are
the two critical technical metrics used to understand the end user
experience. For news and portal sites, good experiences lead to
increased user impressions and brand loyalty.
"The fastest and slowest mobile websites on our July index differed by a
factor of five, a significant difference in the user experience," says
Herman Ng, mobile performance evangelist at Keynote. "The index average
for reliability went down four percent compared to the previous month.
That means that, on average, the mobile websites on our index were not
accessible for more than 20 hours during the month. Whether it happened
over the month or one day; imagine how you would feel if this was a site
you frequented regularly. Would you stick around or find another source
for your news? It shows how far we still have to go when it comes to the
speed and reliability of mobile websites."

Benchmark Lessons
Using raw monthly performance data, Keynote's monthly feature in Wireless
Week provides deep insight into why some mobile websites continue to
shine while others struggle to meet user expectations. Companies ranked
within the Keynote Mobile Index for News & Portal Websites can easily
track their averages in terms of speed and reliability and take action
to make improvements over time.
The July 2011 report demonstrated how having smaller page sizes and a
smaller number of page elements resulted in faster page load times.
Facebook and Google came out on top by keeping a light mobile home page.
While improving a site's aggregate score over time is an important goal,
it's arguably more important to improve in comparison to the industry as
a whole. To read the entire Wireless Week article and mobile
index analysis from July 2011, read

results. Keynote also publishes weekly results, throughout the month on
