BRIEF: Caution on the road urged as 40K return to UA campus

Aug 22, 2011 (The Arizona Daily Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- With about 40,000 students starting at the University of Arizona today, police are asking motorist, pedestrian and bicyclist to be aware of their surroundings when commuting through the area.

Thousands of students walk to school, thousands more ride bikes "and if you're not paying attention, they're not that easy to spot," said Sgt. Juan Alvarez, a UA police spokesman.

Texting and talking on the phone are not good habits to have while getting through traffic, he said.

But drivers are not the only ones who should avoid doing that.

Many students ride bikes while talking on the phone, decreasing their awareness for vehicles around, he said.

Even pedestrians should stay off the phone while going through traffic, "especially in this kind of environment where traffic is more congested," Alvarez said.

UA police wants students, faculty, and anyone in the UA area to follow traffic laws, speed limits, and to be aware of crosswalks.
