Thousands of CU-Boulder students descend on campus for first day of classAug 22, 2011 (Daily Camera - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Ayla Cox used an online class finder to map out her very first college class in the Economics building on the University of Colorado's Boulder campus today. And, at 7:20 a.m., she sat inside an empty classroom -- 40 minutes early for her 8 a.m. economics recitation. Thousands of CU students return to campus today for the first days of the fall semester. For freshmen, the first assignment is finding the correct classroom -- and CU is aiding them this year with an easy-to-use interactive class finder on the Web. Cox, who is from Colorado Springs, will be studying advertising and said she's most looking forward to her classes in the journalism department. CU in July closed down its journalism school, but a department remains. "I want to get good enough grades this year so I can get scholarships next year," Cox said. Kylie McMahon, an integrative physiology major from St.Paul, Minn., gave herself an hour to find her first college class, "Introduction to Writing." "I will have no idea where anything is on campus," she said. Dean Fioresi, of Temecula, Calif., woke up bright and early for an "Inside Nazi Germany" class. But the instructor was a no-show, he said. His goals for the school year: maintain a good grade-point average, sign up for an intramural dodge ball team, and have a better attendance record than his instructors. Kaye Sitterley, of Charlotte, N.C., is in the Leeds School of Business and this week she'll be narrowing down what student clubs she'll join. "I've got a lot of fliers," she said. She's also interested in joining a triathlon club. Sitterley said she came out to Boulder for college because her older brother is here earning a master's degree.
