Ciena Corporation, a network specialist, has been selected by Russian carrier GlobalNet (News - Alert) for the upgrade of its metro optical network, based on Ciena's 4200 Advanced Services Platform.
GlobalNet offers connectivity services to enterprises in high-bandwidth sectors, including content delivery, media and storage. Based in St. Petersburg, the operator serves West Russia with a privately-owned optical network of more than 7,000 km.
Officials with Ciena Corporation said that the newly evolved architecture will include the company's 40G technology and WaveLogic coherent optical processors, supporting the cost-effective, flexible and scalable delivery of highly-reliable services to GlobalNet's customer base.

GlobalNet's long-haul coherent 40G network is based on Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, a highly scalable architecture that includes Ciena's WaveLogic coherent optical processors.
Company officials said that these benefits are now being extended to the metro network using Ciena's 4200 platform, providing additional capacity and flexibility to GlobalNet's enterprise connectivity offerings.
"With the advent of media-rich content and cloud-based services, there is a growing demand for available bandwidth from companies in the St. Petersburg area, which is only going to increase in years to come," said Valery Ostapenko, general director at GlobalNet, in a statement.
"This represents a great opportunity for GlobalNet - and with the flexible and scalable network infrastructure enabled by Ciena, we can continue supporting our customers as their communications services needs evolve, while maintaining economical network operations," said Ostapenko.
Sergei Fishkin, regional managing director, Russia, CIS and the Baltic states at Ciena said that Russian enterprises rely on GlobalNet to offer them reliable connectivity as and when they need it.
Fishkin said that Ciena's optical network architecture enables GlobalNet to scale and meet their growing capacity needs in a simple and cost-efficient manner, empowering these ambitious companies to better compete in today's dynamic market environment.
In other news, Ciena Corp. has announced a partnership with Pangaea Networks (News - Alert), a provider of multi-protocol metro Ethernet local loop connectivity, to deliver reliable and robust Ethernet business services to service providers in the New York City and tri-state area.
