The attacks on Thursday targeted a passenger bus, a private car and a group of soldiers. The number of dead and wounded was not immediately known.

APNewsBreak: BP investigates new sheen in GulfLONDON (AP) _ Oil giant BP said Thursday that it was investigating a new sheen in the Gulf of Mexico but there was no immediate indication it was the result of a new oil spill. A catastrophic April 2010 explosion at BP's Macondo well in the Gulf killed 11 men and led to the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

Police make new arrest in UK phone hacking inquiryLONDON (AP) _ British police made a new arrest Thursday in the country's tabloid phone hacking scandal, amid fresh scrutiny of Rupert Murdoch's media empire after newly disclosed documents appeared to contradict testimony his son and top aide gave to U.K. lawmakers. Police in London confirmed a 38-year-old man, who they declined to name, was arrested at a London police station after he arrived voluntarily Thursday. He is the 13th person to be arrested so far in the saga _ only one of those arrested has already been cleared.


Pope demands greater ethics in economic policyMADRID (AP) _ Pope Benedict XVI denounced the profit-at-all-cost mentality that he says is behind Europe's current economic crisis as he arrived in hard-hit Spain on Thursday, and said morals and ethics must play a greater role in formulating economic policy in the future. Benedict made the comments as he traveled to Madrid for the Catholic Church's World Youth Day, a weeklong Catholic festival that is taking place against a backdrop of the European debt crisis and social unrest among the young that exploded recently in the riots in Britain.

Violence in Pakistani city kills 39 in 2 daysKARACHI, Pakistan (AP) _ A wave of violence killed 39 people in the last two days in Pakistan's largest city, with many of the victims tortured, shot and stuffed in sacks that were dumped on the streets, officials said Thursday. There has been a surge in killings in Karachi in recent weeks that many blame on gangs affiliated with the city's main political parties. The government has been unable to stem the violence, as it also grapples with a faltering economy and a raging Islamist insurgency.

Assad says military operations ended; 18 killedBEIRUT (AP) _ Syrian President Bashar Assad told the United Nations chief that military operations in his country have ended, even as activists said Thursday that security forces shot dead 18 people nationwide and intense shooting erupted in the flashpoint city of Latakia. Assad is coming under mounting criticism for his crackdown on a 5-month-old uprising. Human rights groups and witnesses accuse Syrian troops of firing on largely unarmed protesters and say more than 1,800 civilians have been killed since mid-March.

Turkey vows more strikes against PKK targetsANKARA, Turkey (AP) _ Turkey's military confirmed on Thursday that its air force has pounded Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq and vowed to continue the attacks until the guerrilla group is "rendered ineffective." Jets hit 60 suspected rebel targets in the largely mountainous region near the border with Turkey late Wednesday as well as targets on Mount Qandil, along the Iraqi-Iranian border, where the leaders of the rebel group Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, are believed to be hiding, the military said in a statement.

Indian anti-graft crusader agrees to 15-day fastNEW DELHI (AP) _ A renowned Indian anti-corruption crusader struck a deal with police Thursday to hold a 15-day public hunger strike against graft, ending a standoff at a New Delhi prison in which he turned his brief detention into a sit-in protest. Anna Hazare's ordeal has hit a chord with Indians fed up with rampant corruption. Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched through cities across the country to show their support for his demand to strengthen a government reform bill, while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accused Hazare of trying to circumvent democracy.
