Aug 15, 2011 (SmarTrend(R) Market Commentary via COMTEX) -- Last updated August 15, 2011: 1:30 PM ET --- The major U.S. equity indices are trading higher Monday following corporate dealmaking.

The Empire State index fell to negative 7.7 in August from negative 3.8 in July, according to the manufacturing survey released Monday by the New York Federal Reserve.

The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo home market index remained at 15 in August. Readings over 50 are considered "good." In corporate news, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) announced plans to buy Motorola Mobility Holdings (NYSE:MMI). Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC) said it would acquire Insight Communications for $3 billion, and Transocean said it would pay $1.4 billion for Aker Drilling.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) is trading 1.23% higher at 11,407.26, the S&P500 (INX) is trading 1.46% higher at 1,196.04, and the Nasdaq Composite (IXIC) is trading 0.95% higher at 2,531.65.
