Verizon 4G network to cover WiregrassOZARK, Aug 12, 2011 (Dothan Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Verizon Wireless' Fourth Generation (4G) Long Term Evolution Network is expected to pass through Dothan and Ozark, marking the Wiregrass area as the fourth in the state for the company's new technology that guarantees up to 10 times faster service. Ozark council members recently approved allowing Tower Cloud to move fiber from Dothan through Ozark in order for Verizon to expand its 4G LTE network. The city agreement calls for 3 percent of gross receipts, the same agreement currently in place for at least one other provider. According to Verizon spokeswoman Karen Schulz, the date when 4G will be available for use by Wiregrass residents has yet to be announced, but the company expects to match its 3G footprint with 4G by the end of 2013. The network has already been introduced in Huntsville, Montgomery and Mobile. The 4G LTE network is 10 times faster than the current 3G, she said, and use of the new network would require new hardware for customers. "Dothan is certainly a very important area for us. Some of the things we've not been able to handle on 3G become very real on 4G. The amount of data 4G can carry is really the difference between the power of a kitchen faucet and a water hose," Schulz said. "We're talking downloading movies in minutes as opposed to hours, downloading books and music in seconds as opposed to minutes, gaming, live streaming and video conferencing." City of Ozark IT Director Larry Minton said movement to the 4G LTE network in Ozark was a step forward. "It's a great thing that can be of benefit to both the city and the area," he said.
