Incubator client pulls down $7M in sales

Aug 12, 2011 (St. Joseph News-Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- One of the first clients in the Bond Science and Technology Incubator has pulled down more than $7 million in sales.

DT Search and Designs LLC, which designs military tactical electronic communications equipment, displayed its products in a showcase for members of the military and local lawmakers Thursday at the incubator.

Two pieces of multi-mode field communications equipment (J-1077 IP) sat side-by-side, one in a tub of ice, another on a hot grill to show its ruggedness and adaptability to any climate. The system is currently being tested by Marines in Afghanistan.

Dean Thompson, vice president of engineering for DT Search and Designs, said much of the company's success is owed to the incubator and Dr. Gary Clapp, president and CEO of the Institute for Industrial and Applied Life Sciences (IIALS), which manages the incubator.

Mr. Thompson said Dr. Clapp's guidance has helped them network their services to a broad audience. "If we weren't here," he said of the incubator, "I think we would be nowhere." DT Search and Designs had its production facilities in Pamona and Burbank, Calif. Dr. Clapp said they have since brought those facilities to Missouri.

"Right now we have the ability to make (products) here," he said. "That was our goal, to pull as much of it back to our region ... Get St. Joseph and Northwest Missouri people employed." The communications products being manufactured include cables and distribution boxes called the Relia-Com Communications system that provide phone, data, and fiber optic communications. That equipment has recently been requested in Okinawa, Japan with the 3rd Marine Division and the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, Mr. Thompson said.

"We will not move from the area at all," said Mr. Thompson, should they ever outgrow the incubator.
