EDITORIAL: Cheeseburgers will help parks

DANVILLE, Aug 12, 2011 (Commercial-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Supporters of the Vermilion County Conservation District will be busy Saturday as Kennekuk County Park serves as host to Cheeseburgers & Fun annual fundraiser.

Sponsored by the Vermilion County Conservation District Foundation, the event features the Howl-at-the-Moon 8-hour run/walk, a car show, music and food in the Bunker Hill Area at Kennekuk.

Admission is free, but organizers hope those who attend will buy a few cheeseburgers while they enjoy the activities. Proceeds will go toward the proposed Environmental Education Center at Kennekuk.

The park already sees frequent use by area students, and the development of the education center will only improve the educational opportunities the district offers.

The center also will be designed for other activities, which should attract even more visitors to the area.

Conservation district staff members do a good job maintaining the sites in the county -- Kennekuk, Forest Glen, Heron Park and the Lake Vermilion site.

The parks serve as a real asset to the county, but remain underused by many local residents.

This Saturday provides the perfect opportunity for those who are not familiar with the park to visit. The run/walk begins at 7 a.m., with chainsaw demonstrations starting at 11 a.m.

Music will play from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m., with cheeseburgers being served beginning at 4 p.m. The car show runs 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Show your appreciation for the conservation district's efforts by stopping by Cheeseburgers & Fun on Saturday. It's a day the whole family can enjoy.
