Michigan to debut public school Web resourceAug 12, 2011 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- State officials on Monday will launch MI School Data, a Web site that will be a one-stop portal for education data for every public school in Michigan. The site launches the same day the Michigan Department of Education will release annual report cards for schools. The report card information will be the first piece of data to be displayed on the Web site. The cards assign letter grades to schools and reveal whether schools met the academic goals of the No Child Left Behind law. Because the standard for meeting those goals increased this year, it's likely more Michigan schools will not meet the goals, meaning more will face some of the penalties of the federal law, which include giving parents the option to send their children to better schools and replacing staff. State officials announced the site today. In addition to the report card information, the site will also include information on test scores, enrollment and educator effectiveness. By the end of September, it will have much more information, including postsecondary information that allows viewers to see how many students from each high school in the state enrolled in college, how many remained within two years, and how many took remedial courses. Over the next year, the site will include information on staffing, financial, crime and safety. Much of the information can be found in various parts of the Internet, but this is the first time it will be combined in one place. "This provides an effective and easy way to obtain important education information," said Thomas Howell, director of the Center for Educational Performance and Information, an office within the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget. CEPI worked with the MDE and intermediate school districts to produce the site.
