Man charged with helping hide suspect in murder case

DURANT, Aug 11, 2011 (Durant Daily Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Denison, Texas, man has been charged with being an accessory after the fact after authorities said he provided false information and helped hide a suspect charged with first-degree murder in the shotgun-slaying death of a former Denison High School football player in Cartwright.

Herman Franklin Davis III, 29, was charged Wednesday. According to court papers, Davis helped Dustin Metcalf by securing him a motel room and a cellular phone.

Metcalf, 28, Wesley Dylan Kelley, 18, and Harold Ray Hass, 22, are charged with first-degree murder for the death of Dresean Jaron Jones, 19, who was gunned down in downtown Cartwright behind the Lucky Stop convenience store.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Kelley said he gave Jones $550 for a pound of marijuana, but he never provided it, so Kelley went to Metcalf for help. They then met with Hass and later contacted Alora Dannin Hix, 20, who agreed to lure Jones to Cartwright by promising sexual favors.

An affidavit states that Metcalf and Hass, both armed with firearms, approached the car Jones was riding in. Kelley told OSBI Agent Reanae Childers that Jones ran and Metcalf said, "shoot him already," and Hass fired one shot from a shotgun. Jones was taken to Texoma Medical Center where he died.

Hix was charged with conjoint robbery.

Davis came under investigation after U.S. Special Deputy Marshal Johnny Christian told OSBI Agent Donnie Long that Davis had provided false information about the location of Metcalf. Long arrested Davis Monday evening in Cartwright. Davis, according to the affidavit, agreed to talk, and he admitted to letting Metcalf stay at a hotel room in Denison, plus providing him with a cellular phone and a calling card.

Davis said he knew Metcalf was wanted for murder, the affidavit states, and he also confessed to providing false information to Christian. All suspects, except Metcalf, have been arrested. Anyone with information on Metcalf is encouraged to call the Bryan County Sheriff's Office at 924-3000.
