Buster visits Farmers Mkt.

Aug 10, 2011 (The Stanly News & Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Buster the Bus was at the Stanly County Farmers Market to teach children and their families about school bus safety.

"We're demonstrating to children what the proper way to enter and exit the school bus is and about school bus safety," Brenda Misenheimer, Transportation Information Management System (TIMS) coordinator for Stanly County Schools Transportation Department, said.

This year marks the first time that the remote controlled bus, which moves speaks and blinks, was used to teach about safety at Back to School events. In previous years a full scale vehicle, Gus the Bus, was used for demonstrations at kindergarten camps.

"We've had a steady stream [of children]," Misenheimer said of the turnout early Saturday.

Goodie bags filled with educational handouts and activities were given to children who stopped by the tent.

"They have school bus safety pages and fun things to do," Misenheimer said.

Adults were given a copy of the North Carolina School Bus Stop Law which showed the proper procedure for stopping when a school bus is making a stop.

A bin was also set up at the Farmers Market to collect donations of school supplies to be distributed to Stanly County Schools. School supplies will be collected throughout August and may be dropped off in the designated bin at the Farmers Market or at the Albemarle Downtown Development Corporation (ADDC) office, 144 N. Second St., Albemarle.
