Anything but lonelyAug 11, 2011 (San Marcos Daily Record - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- hen they hit town on Aug. 27, Los Lonely Boys will be anything but. In fact, the day they will close out with a benefit concert for a local League of United Latin American Citizens council at Texas Music Theater has already been proclaimed "Los Lonely Boys Day" in San Marcos; and the three brothers that hail from San Angelo will be given keys to the city by Mayor Daniel Guerrero. Comprised of Henry Garza on guitar, Jojo Garza on bass and Ringo Garza on drums, "Los Lonely Boys" are on a fast track to the top. They have toured extensively and worked and recorded with artists including Willie Nelson and Carlos Santana. In 2006, they opened for the Rolling Stones at Austin's Zilker Park, and just this year have appeared on both "The Tonight Show" and "Jay Leno." Their appearance in San Marcos, to benefit "New Generation" LULAC Council 4876, was arranged by veteran Austin promoter Danny Crooks. But the evening's near-sold out concert -- which will include opening acts Vallejo, Patricia Vonne and Vitera -- is just the final act of a full day of fun. Free family-oriented activities will kick off at 1 p.m. on the lawn of the Hays County Courthouse. Crooks said bands performing throughout the afternoon are Hell Camino and Ridin Blind, both of San Marcos, and Kalua, Este Vato and Boca Aboja, all of Austin. "We're going to have Spencer Pie Company from Kyle doing the food, fajitas, hamburgers, brownies, pies and stuff like that," Crooks said. "Were going to have a snow cone truck with the spouts outside so kids can make their own. We're going to have a Mexican ice cream cart, funnel cakes, jewelry vendors and also a kiddy train on the sidewalk that wraps around the Courthouse." There will also be a petting zoo, pony rides, face painters and "balloon people," Crooks added, along with Karate class exhibitions. Crooks said some tickets remain for the show inside the Texas Music Theater, where doors will open at 7. He promised that local audiences will love the lineup. Vallejo, which Crooks helped launch, will start things off by taking the stage from 8 to 9 p.m. Vonne, who is the sister of Austin director Robert Rodriguez, will perform from 9:20 to 10:20. "For part of her show she wears flamenco castanets. She does the dance. Her music is incredible," Crooks says. Taking the stage at 10:40 is Vitera, featuring Hayden Vitera whose show is half Spanish and half English. "He plays incredible electric violin. He's phenomenal and will be the next big break-out thing out of Austin," he said. Los Lonely Boys will take the stage at midnight. "We're very fortunate that Danny Crooks came into our lives and is doing this as a benefit for us," said Richard Anzaldua of LULAC 4876. Anzaldua said the money raised will go towards scholarships and other activities to benefit the local community. "Everything came together really cool. That's something that doesn't happen a lot. It's not just the concert -- Los Lonely Boys day means a big thing for us. I've got a lot of cousins from San Angelo coming down just for this." Anzaldua acknowledged that even if there were unlimited space in the Texas Music Theater, not everyone would be able to afford the $30 ticket. "The economy's hard," he said, which figured into the decision to "give something back" to the community in the form of the six-hour free show.
