Sony Resolves Patent Disputes with LG [Jiji Press English News Service]

(Jiji Press English News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tokyo, Aug. 11 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Sony Corp. has reached an out-of-court settlement on a number of patent disputes with South Korea's LG Electronics Inc., company officials said Thursday.

The details of the agreement have not been disclosed.

The two electronics makers apparently decided that it was better for both sides to put an end to their drawn-out battle.

The companies now plan to sign a cross-licensing deal that allows them to use each other's patents.

Since last October, the two have filed a total of 24 lawsuits against each other over patents used in such products as digital television sets, Blu-ray Disc players and mobile handsets.

At the end of last year, Sony filed a complaint against LG with the U.S. International Trade Commission, seeking to stop LG from shipping smartphones to the United States.

LG sought a court injunction in the Netherlands blocking the European country from importing Sony's PlayStation 3 video game console.END (c) 2011 ProQuest Information and Learning Company; All Rights Reserved.
