Intel to fund pair of research centers at CMUAug 09, 2011 (The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are poised to work with Intel Corp. scientists at the cutting edge of embedded and cloud computing after the announcement of a $30 million, five-year commitment from the big chip maker to fund two Intel Science and Technology Centers at the school. Intel has been operating a research lab at CMU for the last decade. The new centers, however, represent a shift in the company's focus, according to Intel. Intel spokeswoman Connie Brown said the company used to focus on bricks-and-mortar facilities. The new model Intel Science and Technology Centers will shift more money into research, Brown said. The centers will include collaborative efforts with top researchers from other universities as well as CMU faculty and graduate students. Justin Ratner, Intel Chief Technology Officer, predicted the centers will explore new frontiers. "Imagine, for example, future cars equipped with embedded sensors and microprocessors to constantly collect and analyze traffic and weather data. That information could be shared and analyzed in the cloud so that drivers could be provided with suggestions for quicker and safer routes," Ratner said. Brown said the Cloud Computing Center will employ four Intel workers and 11 from CMU including faculty members, as well as graduate students. The Embedded Computing Center will employ five Intel employees and CMU will provide 16 faculty members in addition to graduate students. CMU officials said Greg Ganger, a professor in electrical and computer engineering at CMU, will be the lead university figure at the Cloud Computing Center, while Priya Narasimhan, a professor in electrical and computer engineering and computer science, will be the lead in the Embedded Computing Center.
