Trib wins seven awards in international journalism contest

Aug 07, 2011 (The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Tribune-Review won seven top awards in an international journalism contest sponsored by the Association for Women in Communications.

It's unusual for one publication to win so many prizes in a "very tough competition," said Beth Veney, the association's communications and programs manager.

The 39th annual Clarion Awards competition drew more than 600 entries, with most of those in the newspaper division, she said. Industry professionals with at least 15 years of experience judged the contest.

The Trib won Clarion Awards in five of the seven categories in the newspaper division: -- Hard news story: Jill King Greenwood, for a July 2010 account of the hard life of a teenage girl who was stabbed to death.

-- News feature series: Betsy Hiel, for "We are all soldiers," which told of rebuilding Iraq through the eyes of American and Iraqi soldiers and Iraqi voters. It was published in four installments from March through May 2010.

-- Feature story: Chris Togneri, for an Oct. 3 report about residents of Montcoal, W.Va., struggling to cope with their loss six months after the deadliest U.S. mine disaster in 40 years.

-- Opinion/editorial column: Salena Zito, for a collection of columns written as she traveled cross-country to chronicle the gap between citizens and the nation's political system.

-- Special Edition/Section: The Trib Sports Department, for a 36-page guide to the NHL Winter Classic played at Heinz Field.

Trib staffers Jason Cato, Rob Amen, Margaret Harding, Jason Lanza and Steve Segal won a Clarion in the online journalism category for "What's Killing Pittsburghers?" The project, published in print and on the Trib's website, www.triblive.com, in October, reported details on every homicide and drug overdose in Allegheny County from 2006 to 2009. The online version included interactive maps and databases.

Photographer Andrew Russell won a Clarion for Feature Photo Series/Essay for "Glimmers of hope," a Jan. 3, 2010, report on students and teachers at the Imani School in East Hills.

The Clarion awards will be presented at the association's national conference in October in Tulsa, Okla.

On Wednesday, The Trib will receive an honorable mention award from the National Press Club in Washington for writing on the problems of geriatrics. Judges cited a series of Trib reports showing mistreatment in state-run veterans homes. The top award, and the only other citation in the category, went to "Inside Edition" for a report on insurance company representatives pressuring Medicare recipients to buy annuities they do not need.
