The Dallas Morning News Robert Miller column

Aug 08, 2011 (The Dallas Morning News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Christopher J. Durovich, president and CEO of Children's Medical Center Dallas, is one of eight new members elected to the American Hospital Association's board of trustees for a term beginning Jan.1.

Children's spokeswoman Peggy O'Hare said that Durovich's selection "ensures that our state and our city's perspective on health care policy issues will be heard and considered. Texas has many attributes not seen in other states: heavy population growth, an increasing number of uninsured patients and a rising Medicaid population. For these reasons, it is critical that the health care needs of Texas are represented in Austin and in our nation's capital as well." Durovich will represent Children's and all the children of North Texas, O'Hare said.

Durovich has more than 30 years of leadership experience in adult and pediatric health care and physician practice management. Before joining Children's in 2003, he served in leadership roles at UT's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Michigan Health System and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation. He also served in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps.

Durovich was chairman of the Child Health Corp. of America and is a board member of the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce.

He has also served on the board of directors of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions; on the board and executive committee of the Texas Hospital Association; and on an American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board and Section for Maternal and Child Health.

He is past chairman of the Children's Hospital Association of Texas, the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council and the Dallas Regional Chamber's Health System CEO Council.

Durovich earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont, a master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado and an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and of the American College of Medical Practice Executives and has served as an adjunct professor at Rice University.

Children's Medical Center Dallas, a private nonprofit institution, is the seventh largest pediatric health care provider in the country, with 559 licensed beds, two full-service campuses and 10 outpatient sites. Children's was the state's first pediatric hospital to achieve Level 1 Trauma status and is the only pediatric teaching facility in North Texas affiliated with UT Southwestern Medical Center. The nonprofit American Hospital Association, founded in 1898, is a national advocate for its members, which includes more than 5,000 hospitals, health care systems, networks and other care providers.
