BRIEF: Cool hands of help

GREENVILLE, Aug 07, 2011 (The Herald Banner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Local service agencies are attempting to assist families who are having trouble keeping cool or paying their electric bills during the heat wave.

Wally Jeffers, director of Hunt County Shared Ministries (FISH) in Greenville, said the organization has air conditioners available, at least for some area residents.

"We have air conditioners for folks who are TXU customers," Jeffers said. "Right now I have six I can give away. I have requested more and I'm hoping to get up to 10 more soon." For those county residents served by GEUS, or FEC, Jeffers said he had approximately 60 fans which he can provide. GEUS and FEC provide funds, which are distributed by FISH, to aid customers with paying their electric bills.

"It is just about used up," Jeffers said.
