IN THE NEWS: HACKERS TARGET SMARTPHONES NOW LAS VEGAS (AP) _ A famous bank robber was supposedly quoted as saying he ripped off financial institutions because ``that's where the money is.'' Whether the man ever said that may be in dispute, but the people who trying to hack smartphones may well cite that as the reason they are targeting phones rather than PCs these days. Recently there have been a string of malicious software aimed at smartphones _ running both Google's Android operating system as well as the system Apple uses to run its iPhones. Security experts say attacks on smartphones are growing fast. And the reason: people use them to do everything from email, shopping, keep track of contacts and store photos. Some hackers believe if they can get into smartphones, they will have access to much more secure data than they might, should they crack a PC open. IN THE NEWS: APPLE, SAMSUNG LEAD IN SMARTPHONE SALES NEW YORK (AP) _ Good news for Apple and Samsung. Not so good for the makers of Nokia and BlackBerry phones. The latest research numbers say Apple and Samsung have moved to the top of the list of global smartphone makers during the second quarter of this year. That move leaves behind both Nokia and Research in Motion, which makes Blackberry handhelds. The biggest gainer of all: Samsung. It moved from number four in the first quarter of this year to number two in the quarter just ended in June. The reason: its Galaxy phones, which run Goggle's Android software. Samsung sold just over 17 million smartphones in the second quarter _ 6.5 million more than it did in the first. ON THE WEB: WIKIPEDIA LOSING CONTRIBUTORS CYBERSPACE (AP) _ It's a case of Wiki-leaks all right _ except it has nothing to do with sensitive documents. Wikipedia has sprung a leak _ when it comes to the number of people contributing to the online encyclopedia. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales says the site is scrambling to simplify its editing procedures in an effort to retain the army of volunteers needed to run the site. Wales says the hemorrhaging of volunteers ``is not a crisis'' _ at least not yet _ but is something he considers ``to be important.'' Online: Wikipedia site: http://www.wikipedia.com IN STORES: NBA VIDEO GAMES WORRY IN WAKE OF Labour STRIFE ATLANTA (AP) _ The NFL has made labour peace and is gearing up for a new season. But the outlook isn't as bright for the NBA _ which is locking out its players. And that is causing a problem for the companies that make the video games based on ``The Association.'' Game makers are reaching back into the game's history to help them get past what is expected to be a drawn out labour dispute. 2K Sports says it plans to release a ``NBA 2K12'' on October 4, lockout or no. But it plans to feature a new mode that will feature the league's top 15 players of all time _ and some of the most famous rivalries in the game. Among the Hall of Famers to be featured will be Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Julius Erving. EA Sports says it won't release an NBA game this fall for the second straight year _ but plans to be back online in 2012. This fall it will offer ``NBA Jam: On Fire Edition.'' It's a 2-on-2 hoops game highlighted by exaggerated high-flying dunks.
