Cameroon launches GPS geodetic observation national networkYAOUNDE, Aug 05, 2011 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Cameroon's Minister of State Property and Land Tenure, Jean-Baptiste Beleoken on Friday in Yaounde launched the GPS (Global Positioning System) geodetic observations of pillars of the country's national geodetic network. "This revolutionary project bears hope of peace, stability and harmonious cohabitation for the various sociological and geographic groups and administrative units in our country," he said. Last December, IGN France International was awarded a technical assistance contract for the supervision of work leading to the update of Cameroon's geodetic network to be completed by the Furgo Geoid company. Eight months after, the minister said that the work to define areas for planting pillars was completed with a total of 525 reference pillars constructed and the GPS geodetic observations already effected at 85 percent and could be completed on August 15 this year. He noted that although the project faced some opposition in some areas, progress was globally satisfactory and the integrated project will certainly enable the country to achieve sustainable development. As at now, the GPS observations involve 25 reference pillars, 500 basic pillars over the entire country (10 regions, 58 divisions and 378 towns), 100 benchmarks around the reference pillars and 144 levelling benchmarks to determine altimetric coordinates of pillars of the network. |
