Audacity of five-year long hacking scheme takes top US cybercops by surprise [Asian News International]

(Asian News International Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) New York, August 5(ANI): A cyber espionage case dubbed as "Operation Shady RAT, which has revealed a five-year long hacking scheme targeting US government, UN computers and defense and private industries has caught top US cybercops by surprise.

Security firm McAfee, which unearthed the hacking campaign, said it led to a massive loss of information that poses a huge economic threat.

"Even we were surprised by the enormous diversity of the victim organizations and were taken aback by the audacity of the perpetrators," McAfee threat research's Vice President Dmitri Alperovitch said.

His report claimed the spying came from a single, unnamed source, widely believed to be China, but offered few details for verification and did not identify most of 72 victims, 49 of which were American.

McAfee said it was only guessing at what data was stolen.

"The report is fairly accurate. It's McAfee's report. It's pretty self-explanatory", Fox News quoted a US official, as saying.

"We're aware of the report. Detecting and blocking cyberintrusion is a key cybersecurity goal for this administration," the White House spokesman Jay Carney said Fort Meade U.S. Cyber Command Spokesperson Colonel Rivers Johnson said the agency was doing best possible to protect the country from cyberattacks.

"We have an active defense system in place to hunt within DoD networks and prevent infiltration. We are using all appropriate means right now as part of that active defense." Indeed, the agency is prepared to expand its efforts if needed," Johnson said. (ANI) (c) 2011 Asian News International (ANI) - All Rights Reserved. Provided by Syndigate.info an Albawaba.com company
