Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano say a law enforcement effort called Operation Delego (del-EGG-o) investigated more than 500 people around the world since the probe was launched in December 2009.

Report: Global cyberattack under way for 5 yearsNEW YORK (AP) _ A computer security firm says cybercriminals have spent at least the past five years targeting more than 70 government entities, nonprofit groups and corporations to steal troves of data. McAfee Inc. said in a report Wednesday that the attacks have targeted a broad range of organizations, including the United Nations, the International Olympic Committee and companies in mostly in the United States.

Bed-ridden, caged, Egypt's Mubarak goes on trialCAIRO (AP) _ An ailing, 83-year-old Hosni Mubarak, lying ashen-faced on a hospital bed inside a metal defendants cage with his two sons standing protectively beside him in white prison uniforms, denied charges of corruption and complicity in the killing of protesters at the start of his historic trial on Wednesday. The spectacle, aired live on state television, was a stunning moment for Egyptians. Many savored the humiliation of the man who ruled with unquestionable power for 29 years, during which opponents were tortured, corruption was rife, poverty spread and political life was stifled.


Dow average is headed for its ninth straight lossNEW YORK (AP) _ Stocks slumped again Wednesday as worries about the economy deepen. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 101 points in afternoon trading, putting in on track for its ninth straight day of losses, the longest losing streak since February 1978. The S&P 500 index was headed for its eighth straight loss.

Services firms expand at slowest pace in 17 monthsWASHINGTON (AP) _ Service businesses such as restaurants, hotels and financial companies experienced their weakest growth in 17 months in July. The report Wednesday from the Institute for Supply Management confirms other data that show the economy is struggling two years after the recession officially ended.

Factory orders dropped 0.8 percent in JuneWASHINGTON (AP) _ Businesses cut back on orders for airplanes, autos and heavy machinery in June, lowering demand for factory goods for the second time in three months. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that orders to U.S. factories fell 0.8 percent in June. A key category that tracks business investment plans managed a small increase, offering a positive sign amid other gloomy reports on the economy.

Earth's two moons? It's not lunacy, but new theoryWASHINGTON (AP) _ Earth once had two moons, until one of them made the fatal mistake of smacking into its big sister in what is being called the "big splat," some astronomers theorize. The result: The planet was left with a single bulked-up and ever-so-slightly lopsided moon.

UN declares 3 new regions in Somalia famine zonesNAIROBI, Kenya (AP) _ The U.N. declared three new regions in Somalia famine zones on Wednesday, expanding the area where the highest rates of malnutrition and mortality are taking place, including the refugee camps in the capital of Mogadishu. The U.N.'s food arm said that famine is likely to spread across all regions of Somalia's south in the next four to six weeks. Famine conditions are likely to persist until December, the Food and Agriculture Organization said.

Heather Mills: I was told my phone was hackedLONDON (AP) _ Heather Mills is telling the BBC that a senior editorial figure with the Trinity Mirror group of newspapers has told her that her voicemail had been intercepted. In a telephone interview with the BBC's "Newsnight" program Wednesday, the ex-wife of former Beatle Paul McCartney named the journalist who informed her of the hacking, but the BBC bleeped out the person's name.

Eagles DT Patterson has seizure; alert at hospitalBETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) _ Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson was alert, stable and joking at a hospital after suffering a seizure at training camp at Lehigh University, trainer Rick Burkholder said Wednesday. Patterson dropped to the ground between plays during a morning practice, and the player began violently shaking. He was immediately tended to by Burkholder and his staff, with assistance from rookie offensive lineman Danny Watkins, a trained firefighter.
