Top 50 local businesses: IBM still reigns as Boulder-area's largest employer [Daily Camera, Boulder, Colo.]

(Daily Camera (Boulder, CO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 01--During the past 12 months, the collective employment activity of the Boulder region's largest employers is a microcosm of what's occurring statewide and nationwide: the job losses continue, but at a slower pace than what occurred during the height of the downturn.

The activity of the Boulder County and Broomfield County area also reflects a mixed bag of activity. Firms such as Ricoh, Amgen and Array BioPharma announced plans to pare down their local work forces, while others such as Whole Foods Market, DigitalGlobe and Balfour Senior Living expanded.

To provide a snapshot of the activity occurring at the local area's largest employers, the Camera today publishes its annual list of the top 50 largest private sector employers in Boulder and Broomfield counties.

For the fourth consecutive year, the five largest area employers include IBM, which once again tops the list, Broomfield-based Level 3 Communications, Broomfield-based Ball Corp., Oracle Corp. and Covidien, but the order of the five has shifted thanks to a significant employment drop at Covidien.

Covidien officials did not respond to a follow-up inquiry from the Camera regarding the 500-plus job drop.

And, unfortunately, like last year's list, the 2011 rankings have to come with some similar caveats.

Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM stopped disclosing employment figures for its individual sites in 2010; Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle also does not break down its employee base; and Walmart officials did not return numerous calls and requests for information.

Prior to 2010, if a company did not submit information to the Camera, the firm would not be included in the rankings. However, considering the relative size of these employers, the Camera opted to provide estimates for businesses that employ more than 1,000 people locally. The estimates were obtained through a number of sources including federal, state and municipal public documents; research conducted by regional economic development officials; information provided by officials close to the companies; and publicly announced activity for the respective companies.

IBM's 2,800-employee count remains unchanged as the figure was confirmed by a couple of sources, including a person close to the company. IBM announced plans in late 2009 to hire 500 more employees in Boulder. Those planned additions could more than counteract any work force reductions that have occurred in the past 12 months.

Oracle's employee count is 50 people higher as the information, obtained from area economic development offices, appears to also include the software firm's Boulder County employees in addition to its Broomfield campus.

Some of the biggest movers on this year's list include Balfour Senior Living, which added 80 employees and vaulted 12 places to No. 32 and Key Equipment Finance dropping 12 places to No. 44 with 63 fewer jobs.

In terms of full-time jobs, the biggest swings occurred at Covidien, down 510 jobs to 1,790 and Whole Foods, which added 135 jobs to bring its total to 847. King Soopers' number dropped by 305 as the company last year apparently included part-time employees in its submission.

The new faces on this year's list include Longmont-based Oskar Blues Brewery and Zoll Medical's local site.

Some companies are noticeably absent from the list, however, and they include past Top 50ers such as Micro Motion, Gaiam, Lexmark and Rally Software, but also firms such as GHX, Google, Microsoft, Xcel, Brocade, Color Graphics and Rally Software. These firms did not make submissions to the Camera or declined to participate.

Also, West Corp. subsidiary Polycom Inc. recently located its 80-person Boulder office to Westminster. Intrado, the other Boulder County-based subsidiary of Omaha, Neb.-based West, remains ranked.

The process To compile the list, the Camera ran announcements seeking entries and also contacted hundreds of businesses.

The newspaper ranked the companies by the number of full-time employees based in Boulder and Broomfield counties. The rankings do not include government agencies or nonprofit groups, meaning the absence of large employers such as the University of Colorado, which employs more than 6,800 people; school districts such as Boulder Valley and St. Vrain that each employ more than 2,700 people; hospitals, such as the 800-employee Longmont United Hospital; and municipalities such as the city of Boulder, which employs more than 1,000 people.

Companies were asked to submit the number of full-time employees, but some submitted figures that possibly included part-time employees. Walmart's estimate is partly based on a figure that could include part-time workers.

This year, some of the area's top employers either could not be reached for participation or declined to disclose local site information.

To rectify these issues of non-disclosure and to ensure the area's biggest employers (those with more than 1,000 employees) are represented accurately, the Camera used information from public documents and figures gathered by municipalities and economic development organizations to obtain employment figures.

In cases where a business is a division of a larger entity, the parent company's financial information may appear and is noted in that manner. A company's local site or regional headquarters is listed as the address, if it is applicable. In cases where there is no single division or regional headquarters, the parent company's address is listed.

If a company is privately held and did not disclose sales or earnings, the term "WND" is used to indicate the company would not disclose information and subsequent research or public documents did not provide an answer. Revenue and earnings from publicly traded companies were obtained via Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

Some foreign entities' financial figures have been calculated into dollars using the conversion rates as of the end-date of the full -- or fiscal-year's earnings report.

The companies' descriptions have been edited for grammar, clarity and space.

Accompanying information submitted by the companies, SEC filings, financial wire service information, financial Web sites, state and local economic development organizations, and the Camera archives were used to compile this list.
