State junior rodeo riders do well in N.M.Jul 30, 2011 (The News-Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Members of the Indiana Cinch rodeo team turned in a good effort at the national finals June 26-July 2 in Gallup, N.M. Cinch, a division of the National High School Rodeo Association, is for youngsters in grades 6-8. This year, about 24 Indiana youths competed on the state's Cinch rodeo circuit. About a fourth live in northern Indiana. To qualify for national finals, a rider had to score in the top four in points statewide in a particular event and maintain a C-plus or higher average during the school year. At the national finals, 907 youngsters from the United States, Canada and Australia competed, said Jody Hurley of Fort Wayne, the mother of Indiana team member Sydney Hurley. Here are top finishers among Indiana Cinch team members: --Michael Shreeve of Salamonia: 13th overall in Junior Bull Riding. --Lane McPheeters of Salem: 15th overall in Tie Down. --Strand Barricklow of Lebanon: fourth overall in Chute Dogging and 16th overall in Tie Down. Sydney Hurley was elected student secretary of the National Junior High Rodeo Association. The office includes a scholarship and a laptop computer so she can conduct association business.
