OPINION: Should schools be examining information on confiscated cellphones?

Aug 01, 2011 (Sun Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Teenagers should have some rights, too, at least when it comes to schools confiscating cell phones.

Oh, I have no problem with schools taking cellphones that go off in class. Any kid who has a cell phone in school -- which means just about everybody -- should at least have the brains to turn it off on school property.

But what has been going on at Boca Raton High School, with charges of searching confiscated student cellphones and punishing students who don't provide access to their text messages, goes way too far.

When it comes to confiscating phones, a school shouldn't go any further than taking it and waiting for the kid or the parent to claim it. Text messages and other information on the phones is not the business of the school.

The school says it is reviewing its policy regarding student cellphones, but admits that administrators have seized and examined cellphones.

Don't school administrators have anything better to do than examine confiscated cellphones? If not, they better find some busy work, and quickly.
