Internet - Symantec Warns On Cyber Attacks, Hacking in CountryLagos, Aug 01, 2011 (Daily Trust/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- IT security company, Symantec, has said that increase in the internet access in Nigeria will make the country more prone to cybercrimes. The company called on government agencies and stakeholders in the IT industry to deploy technology that will assist in guiding against hacking and other cybercrimes. Regional Vice President, Emerging Market, Symantec International, Mr. Kelvin Isaac while speaking with journalists in Lagos on the introduction of the company's latest security device "Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 (SEP 12)" in Nigeria, said government must follow the penetration of broadband facilities in the country with proper monitoring to ensure that Internet traffic within and outside the country is positively utilized. Isaac said according to Symantec's Internet Security Threat Report, attackers unleashed more than 286 malicious programmes in 2010, creating a challenge for traditional signature-based security solutions that can keep up with this volume of attack because of the increase in bandwidth in Nigeria through MainOne and Glo 1 submarine cables respectively. He disclosed that SEP 12 and Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition can help to combat the sheer volume of sophisticated attacks targeting organizations of all sizes. Symantec International Vice President, Emerging Market said that, "Targeted attacks are becoming more prevalent, most notably Stuxnet, exposing companies, countries to greater risk as malicious code is written specially to attack them and Nigeria, being a fast emerging market, with huge bandwidth deposits from the various submarine cables, risk higher foreign invasion of cyber attacks because of the glut in capacity utilization. Reason why government, regulator and operators must work in collaboration to ensure that, every avenue to encourage is blocked completely in the country and the risk mitigated." |
