BRIEF: Peeping Tom camera found in Hilton Head store's restroom

Jul 29, 2011 (The Island Packet - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Hilton Head Island convenience store clerk has been arrested following the discovery of a video camera in a public bathroom, according to a news release today from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Emilio Felipe Derutte-Casas, 50, was charged Thursday with on one count of being a Peeping Tom after a video camera was found Saturday hidden in the women's bathroom of the Kangaroo Express on Mathews Drive. The camera was discovered by a female customer when she accidentally dislodged it from its hiding place in the restroom's toilet paper dispenser, the release said.

The customer immediately notified store personnel and the Sheriff's Office. The camera was seized, and investigators identified store employee Casas as the suspect responsible for installing the camera, the release said. A search warrant was executed Thursday at Casas' apartment in Woodlake Villas where computers and other evidence were seized for forensic analysis.

The case remains active as investigators are working to determine how long the camera may have been in operation and recording, the release said.
