BRIEF: College: Freeland tabbed for Lone Star preseason honor


Jul 27, 2011 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ODESSA, Texas -- Midwestern State senior midfielder David Freeland was named the co-Lone Star Conference Offensive Preseason Player of the Year on Tuesday after helping the Mustangs reach the 2010 NCAA Division II Final Four.

Freeland, a Permian High School graduate, tied for the team lead with 11 goals as a junior and added three assists. He finished tied for second in the conference in goals. His 25 points ranked second on the team and third in the conference.

Freeland shared the preseason honor with Incarnate Word's Callum Riley. Both received four of the 10 votes cast by league head coaches, sports information directors and media members.


Midwestern State opens the 2011 season Sept. 2 at home in Wichita Falls against Central Baptist. The Mustangs travel to Odessa on Sept. 23 to take on UTPB.
